n a sense, art is also a self-made career. But such “self-made” like Wang Jinsong is very rare. In 2003, in the Zhouyi village of the southeast Beijing, with the help of the workers, he built up the “Wang’s House” occupying nearly 2000 square meters which functions as both studio and home. The air here is very fresh. The only inconvenience is that there’s no other artist friend around, but he can freely dominates such a large area. He designed his studio, living room, movie room and warehouse. Now he built up a new studio where he can experiment and design the mobile sketchpad he invented.
After his graduation from the Chinese Painting Department of Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the China Academy of Art) in 1987, Wang Jinsong switched to oil painting in a few years, because oil painting is the most direct and appropriate manner for expression and innovation. Since then, he never stops his trials in different areas. The works for which he is well-known include oil painting, photography, ink and even architecture. But from beginning to end, he never abandon ink that is a natural manner of Chinese people to express spontaneous emotion. Although his ink creation is never stopped, it appears to the audiences at the latest, because he has a feeling of self-cherishing to ink.
From 2007, he started to exhibit the ink series over the years that include landscapes, figures and flowers. He will participate in an ink group exhibition, so it seems reasonable that he takes ink as his main object of study in the next few years.
As the eldest son of his family in addition to the childhood home environment, Wang Jinsong is very diligent. It might be the reason he invented the mobile sketchpad. After being installed motor, It became the modern gadget controlled by remote control. Even the design magazine found him for his noted invention. The seriousness is also expressed in his creation. His custom on painting, especially for the control of time, is very free and totally according to his interests; if there’s the feeling comes, he can paint until exhaustion in his studio. Therefore, his latest ink works include a lot of impromptu works that are without figures but are only describing about the feeling of ink.
The insular environment provides Wang Jinsong the truly independent circumstance for creation. For more than ten years, except the work in the Fine Arts Department of Beijing Institute of Education, he has never contracted with any gallery. The freedom is what he wants. Here is his personal paradise.
