Project 90: “Waste Not” – Song Dong Exhibition
By ArtzineChina

ince 1971, the “Projects” Exhibition has been a major event at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and has been vital forum committed to the understanding and exploration of international contemporary artists. The Projects exhibition is organized by curators from all departments of the Museum, and has gradually become an increasingly significant project dedicated to the arts and academics. To date, numerous internationally acclaimed artists– as well as many celebrated Chinese artists – have made their claim to fame through this event, such as Bill Viola, Olafur Eliasson, Maurizio Cattelan, Rosemarie Trockel, and many more.

On the 24th of June this year, MoMA unveil their “Projects 90”, a solo exhibition featuring Chinese artist Song Dong, and his installation piece titled “Waste Not”. This is a collaborative piece between Song Dong and his mother, and was first shown at the Beijing Hua Lang in 2005, the 6th Guangzhou Biennale in 2006, the Berlin World Culture Pavilion in 2008, and in the New Art Gallery in Walsall, England. The items composing “Waste Not” are all everyday objects that have been collected from his mother’s life, such as legless dolls, soap, bottles, pans, plates, tubs, and so on. “Waste Not” – or wu jin qi gong in Chinese – is philosophical concept from China’s past, and security by means of collecting everyday objects was a requisite guideline for survival. In our modernized society – especially in the highly consumerist culture of America – this lifestyle is quite difficult to imagine, as it is rooted in an era when many were lacking in material possessions. Thus, the stark contrast posed by this piece at this year’s MoMA exhibition will be especially meaningful.

Artist Song Dong was born in Beijing in 1966; his works usually take the form of film, installation, performance pieces, or other experimental medium. The prominent known Museum of Modern Art garners much respect internationally and is an extremely influential force in the art world, and a solo exhibition at the MoMA such as this will no doubt secure Song Dong a place on its map.

In addition, to complement Song Dong’s MoMA “Projects 90” exhibition, New York’s Pace Wildenstein will hold organize an art salon in it’s 25th Street gallery, to begin on June 25th. Sarah Suzuki, the curator for this Projects, Song Dong himself, as well as a number of art critics will hold a one time “Contemporary Chinese Art and Culture” Forum, and disuss issues – such as the link between Western culture and Chinese traditional art – from a societal and political point of view. Song Dong’s performance piece “Edible Bonsai” will also be on view at the Salon, and open to the public until September.

Project 90: “Waste Not” – Song Dong runs through from June 24th to September 7th at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York City. For more information, please refer to: www.moma.org
