Urban Troubadours
By ArtZineChina

rban Troubadours, one of the exhibition of Crossroad Festival 2009, is on display at A Thousand Plateaus Art Space, Chengdu. The exhibition is directed by A Thousand Plateaus Art Space with the co-organizer of Consulate General of France in Chengdu. The exhibition time is from May 9 to June 10, 2009.

Cities have become the world’s most dynamic field of existence. They are also the largest showroom of mundane trivialities. How young artists can preserve their sensitivity and reflective consciousness when being an inhabitant of these showrooms is a question that Chen Zhipeng, Deng Xianzhi, Hao Liang, Liu Chuanhong, Ludwig, Justyna Ptak, Margarita Saad, Yu Aijun and Zhu Bing will chant upon in their own ‘troubadour’ way.

Although living and working in Beijing, the young artist Liu Chuanhong decidedly removed himself from city life, choosing instead to go to the mountains to paint and write from 2000 on.Yu Aijun teaches at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, where he started his artistic career as undergraduate and then graduate student. For the past few years he has paid close attention to the sketch as artistic medium. The works of the young artist Hao Liang breathe an air of classical art. He deliberately looks back and reflects on the contemporary through the lens of tradition. Ludwig is a French artist, living in China, traveling in Asia. His works are of 'climatic nature', being the condensation of his walks, taking the form of photographs, light drawings, texts, translucent images, videos and installations.Margarita Saad is a French artist born in 1967 in Montevideo, Uruguay. She took her inspiration from different forms of writing, such as European, Indo-American, Oriental and Chinese calligraphy in particular.Zhu Bing spent his childhood in the 70s in an army factory in the north of China. Housing in Guangzhou is modern and bright but Zhu Bing, although having lived there for many years, still considered himself a northerner. This attitude reveals itself in his series Dream Garden. The non-existent academic training of Deng Xianzhi reveals itself in his direct and natural technique, leading straight to the soul. Deng Xianzhi is a doctor at Kangfu Hospital. His creations can therefore be seen as just another healing method.Chen Zhipeng is a troubadour in nature. At a time where music is everywhere and melodies become too easily too fashionable, Chen Zhipeng falls back on traditional instruments such as porcelain, pottery and Nepal drum to voice his inner sounds. Justyna Ptak is born in 1981 in Poland. She currently lives and works in Nice, France and uses video, installations and drawing as her means of expression.
