hang Huan's new studio in the Minhang District of Shanghai is even bigger than his old one. The studio covers about 15 acres and occupies the grounds of an old boiler factory. Today, the entire property is being renovated to make way for a small art city.
Already, there are bridges and streams, hundreds of trees are being planted and old factory warehouses that are being refitted for art and the large work crews that Zhang Huan -- one of China's leading artists -- employs to bring his ideas to life. There are wood carvers, young artists producing painting with ash collected from Buddhist temples, workman building crates; a shop to purchase supplies and even a dormitory and dining room.
In the images below you can see the ash works, wood carving, metal works, galleries and a huge warehouse that hold a Ming Dynasty ruin that is supposed to be part of the set for an opera Zhang Huan is directing in Europe next year.
