ang Zhigang has two studios in Kunming; one in Chuangku and the other in Haigeng. As Kunming is his homeland, his studios have a homely-atmosphere to it. Just like his “Children in Meeting” oil painting series, his studios themselves emit a certain warmth and innocence. On sunny days, the sunlight would filter in through the big windows and cast a shadow over the canvases. At times, Tang Zhigang would gaze at the paintings on the floor or would stand in front of an enormous canvas and look above at the few simple strokes of sketches in silent consideration.
Dating back to 1976, Tang Zhigang joined the People’s Liberation Army. 20 years later, he left the army for the Academy of Arts in Yunnan. Although he was responsible for the military propaganda and the teaching of art to the children in the army, he always paid close attention to the evolution of Chinese contemporary art in China. In 2005, he setup a studio in a winery in Beijing, one of which was big enough to accommodate all of his works and his feelings of worry and anxiety towards mankind, society, and his living environment. It was only that his studio then lacked the big windows and bright sunlight which his studio in Kunming could provide.
