fter 30 minutes of walking from “Shanghai Circus World” subway station (line 1), you will find the Shanghai based sculpturer Liu Jianhua’s studio on Lingshi Road. Stepping into the studio, silence grabs you immediately. The artist Liu Jianhua is working on new pieces. The 400㎡ studio occupied by his old works - such as “Export -- Cargo Transit” which was shown in Shanghai Gallery of Art, 2007; “Can you tell me” which was displayed in Shangart Gallery, 2006; even the earlier famous works “Obsessive Memories” and “Play” were also there. Liu Jianhua’s new work: “Untitled” and “Unreal Scene” was on show in Beijing Commune and Galleria continua, Italy late last year.
Despite being a professor of the sculpture department, Shanghai University, Liu Jianhua goes to his studio almost every day, “I used to have two studios, one in Wan Hangdu Road and another near Shanghai University. At that time I had to commute between them, which was hard work. Now it is much better.” He has two assistants working with him until 5:30 pm. When it comes to making porcelain, however, he will return to Jing Dezhen, his hometown, to get works done. Liu Jianhua has developed a habit of swimming since last winter. Daily life for him is organized and quiet.
Currently, Liu Jianhua has just submitted a project for Shanghai 2010 EXPO. Meanwhile, his famous work “Regualr•Fragile” is on display in Park Hyatt Shanghai, which was organized by curator Fumio Nanjo. About 20 years ago, Liu Jianhua was in Jing Dezhen, Jiang Xi, working hard towards his future. Now, his efforts have paid off and what he has been pursuing since, is becoming a reality. As for the future, he will continue walking down his path.
