he Yuz Art Museum, a first private collection art museum endorsed by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture as a museum of public character, was officially opened by Ibu Megawati Sukarnoputri, the former President of Indonesia on 17 December, 2008.
Housed in a five story segment of a building complex, the Dharmawangsa Center, in Jakarta, the inauguration was attended by many in the Indonesian art collection community as well as many artists from China whose works are featured in the museum.
The inaugural exhibition, Lovely Blossoms and Full Moon, is curated by Kwok Kian Chow, featuring works by Yue Minjun, Fang Lijun, Wang Guangyi, Zhang Xiaogang, Qi Zhilong, Lu Hao, Xu Bing and some 40 of China's best known artists of high international standing. Also in providing encouragement to younger artists, the exhibition featured a special segment of works by Ms. Li Xiaojing.
The Yuz Art Museum in Jakarta is the first of a network of museums and art spaces to be established by the Yuz Foundation, sited in Beijing, Shanghai, Jakarta and Bali. Operating strictly as museums, emphasis will be placed on collection development, curatorship and public programmes. While the collection focuses on Chinese contemporary art, the museums are intended to facilitate aesthetic and cultural exchanges among Asian countries, particularly between China, Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Said Mr Yu, "I wish to show my commitment to the artists and society at large that collection development serves long term cultural developmental goals. By establishing the Yuz Art Museum in Jakarta, I want to show the dynamism of cross cultural appreciation of contemporary art, and the potentials that intra-Asia cultural exchanges may stimulate exciting developments in contemporary art."
In her speech, Ibu Megawati said, "The existence of this museum is a good thing. Even though we do have such events here once in a while, but they are all in smaller scale. Yuz Museum has taken the initiative to be the first private museum endorsed by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, and I hope this will set as an example to the others. The establishment of this Museum not only benefits Indonesia by bridging good relations between Indonesia and China but also to the other countries. This is something that I will support and the Indonesian people will need more of such works. "
The Yuz Art Museum has established an international academic committee comprising Mr Yu, Professor Wu Hung of the University of Chicago, Mr Kwok Kian Chow of Singapore and will be inviting several more art historians and critics to be on the panel that will decide on the exhibition and publication programmes of the museum. Six to eight exhibitions a year are planned in this not for profit setup.
