 otheby's April 9 evening sale in Hong Kong recorded a blockbuster sale valued at $21 million. A set of paintings by Liu Xiaodong, "Battlefield Realism: The 18 Arhats," sold for $7.9 million, a record for the artist and one of the highest prices ever paid for a set of works by a Chinese artist.
Other artists also sold well, despite fears that the sale would be weak because an earlier auction was somewhat lackluster. Some experts say many collectors were eager to hold prices or strengthen them, and so they flocked to Hong Kong for the big sale, which included the auction of the Estella Collection.
