Wei Guangqing
ei Guangqing (1963 Hubei) is a talented illustrator and painter who was at the forefront of Chinese contemporary art in the 1980s, appearing in the 1989 Avant-garde show at the National Gallery and in other exhibitions alongside artists like Wang Guangyi. Indeed, Wei and Wang Guangyi had quite similar styles in the 1980s. They mastered the use of pop art, graphic illustration and frozen portrayals of humanity. But Wang Guangyi took his pop art directly into political pop with depictions of Mao and Cultural Revolution figures. Wei, a one time performance artist, moved toward cartoon like illustrations of naked women, cars, pop heroes and symbols of change that looked more like magazine illustrations. But his range of works over time is varied and familar to those who have followed the evolution of political pop art in China. He lives and works in Wuhan, where he is dean of the school of animation at Hubei Institute of Arts.
