eng Li (1962 Jiangxi) is a well-known stage designer and photographer. He is best known for his elaborate decorations of the People’s Art Theatre and his work with the film maker Zhang Yimou. He won acclaim for the stage design of Zhang Yimou’s direction of “Turandot” in Beijing and Florence. And he also worked with Zhang on the ballet, “Raise the Red Lantern,” which has been widely praised for its design. But last November, Zeng’s photographs were center stage at the Shanghai Gallery of Art. His solo exhibition, “A China Chronicle,” involved more than 20 massive photographs of Beijing Hutongs and construction sites. Zeng has made a hobby of photographing boom and doom on China\'s urban landscapes. His work has been praised by Christopher Phillips, the director of the International Center of Photography in New York, who once wrote: “These photographs provide a meticulous record of the changes that have taken place in everyday urban fabric of Beijing and other cities, as the hutong. |
