 he OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) is a subdivision of the He Xiangning Art Museum. Officially established on January 28, 2005, OCAT is China's only non-profit contemporary Chinese art organization connected to a national art museum. While OCAT is named after the Overseas Chinese Town in which it is located, it also has exhibition spaces in Beijing and Shanghai. OCAT's mission is comprised of two interrelated parts: the integration of domestic and overseas resources on contemporary Chinese art, and the advancement of contemporary Chinese art to international standards. Through its organization of exhibitions, academic forums, and an international art residency program, OCAT stands out as a professional organization that simultaneously upholds native Chinese characteristics while operating as an international contemporary art institution. Figuratively speaking, OCAT seeks to function as a communications network, a supply station, and a launching site for contemporary Chinese art. All of these aspects are reflected in its designation as a "Contemporary Art Terminal."
While visual art constitutes the main focus of OCAT's programming, this extends to experimental performance, music, film and video as well as multimedia art. This interdisciplinary approach not only generates multiple levels of artistic dialogue, but also facilitates the exhibition and exchange of talented artists from home and abroad.
OCAT’s art collection is focused on contemporary Chinese art. Many of the works were donated by the artists themselves or collected through the exhibition format.
