 ang Fudong (1971 Beijing) is one of the most talented and promising young video and film artists in China. His short films are often about young urban intellectuals coming to terms with a nation witnessing growing affluence yet spiritual decay. His films, like "Seven Intellectuals in Bamboo Forest" and "Estranged Paradise," are beautifully and artfully conceived and shot but often difficult to understand because there is no clear narrative. More often there is a mood and scene the artist is creating on film. Yang Fudong was a finalist in 2004 for the Hugo Boss Award and his appearances at Documenta and the Venice Biennale have helped make him a favorite among international curators. He lives and works in Shanghai. |
