 hen Zhen (1955-2000 Shanghai) was one of China's first major installation artists. After studying painting in Shanghai he moved to Paris for study in the 1980s and began creating remarkable installations using everyday objects, like beds, cots, mattresses, bowls and other things. He explored the dualities of life, the Yin and Yang, and the differences between East and West. He created elaborate installations and projects around the world, travelling to Israel and the slums of Brazil. He lived in New York, Paris and Shanghai, which he returned to in the 1990s and became best-known for his Taoist meditations on life, experimenting with ideas that questioned the relationship between humans and the objects around them. He planted roses in cow dung, and created a huge bed and drum piece for which the composer Tan Dun created music. But Chen died in 2000 at the age of 45, after a long bout with cancer. |
