Theow Tow, Deputy Chairman, Tina Zonars, Head of the Chinese Art department:
“Today’s sale of Fine Chinese Ceramics, Jades and Works of Art totaled $13.3 million, the second highest total ever for a single sale of Chinese Art at Christie’s. The auction was particularly strong in the traditional collecting areas including jades, sculpture, ceramics and scholar’s objects which all performed exceedingly well. The response was vigorous, focused and confident and originated from the established collector’s community as well as new collectors who have discovered the universal and timeless attraction of these works and their invaluable place within the history of Chinese art. The superb 12th century gilt-bronze figure of acuoye guanyin became the centerpiece of the sale at $1,945,000. The Meriem Collection: Important Chinese Snuff Bottles achieved $3,988,050. Today’s results certainly bode well for the Chinese Art sales in Hong Kong at the end of November, including Important Chinese Jades From The Personal Collection of Alan And Simone Hartman Part II on November 27.”
