Moon Tattoo—Sun Liang Solo Exhibition
By staff

“Moon Tattoo” is the title of Sunliang’s representative work. The painter has created works on this title three times. That narcissistic swan figure is the union of Leda and the swan, aesthetic and mysterious. How can the moon be tattooed? What is it like of the moon tattoo? The poetic title can always bring illusions, making people escape from the chaotic real world, imagine and experience a fairy land.
While mentioning Sun Liang, people familiar with him will inevitably think of bizarre and enchanting shape, fantastic and ornate color and exquisite and elegant atmosphere. His road to success, starting from early 1980s, has experienced several changes in style. In 1993, when the Chinese artists were selected by Venice Biennale for the first time, he was an important representative of them. He combines traditional Chinese aesthetic taste and modern art fantastic image, which has extended tradition and created future. His works are mixture of Shanhai Jing (a Chinese book on early mythology and religion) and the Bible, presenting a touching aesthetic feeling lingering on dreamland and illusion. The feeling has exceeded time and space and is beyond culture difference.
Apart from oil paintings on canvas, Sun Liang creates works on other materials. This exhibition also selects his prints, oil paintings on hide and installations with mixed media. Visitors can have an overall understanding on Sun’s talent by such a comprehensive display.
This exhibition is the first solo show after the opening of Z-art Center. Zhangjiang is a place encouraging and nurturing creativity. I expect visitors here can be touched by Sun Liang’s works.
