n Epoch of Yu Gong is the first solo exhibition of photography ever held at SGA since it first opened 3 years ago. As one of the most prominent stage designers from China, Zeng Li is, in his own right, an experimental photographer who has been investigating China’s urbanization for many years.
“In marked comparison with other artists, the idiosyncrasy and uniqueness of Zeng Li’s photographs are attributes of a visionary mindset. How many artists could admit that what they’re doing would take few decades to realize? Zeng Li represents one such rare case, as this is exactly what he has set out to do.
“From the advent of his photographic creation, Zeng Li has devised a diverse methodology for his oeuvre. While traveling, he documents objectively with the camera lens our collective memories that are specific to an era. In his own words, his plan, ‘is to construct a museum of imageries, for today’s history with artwork’. Knowing how difficult it is to achieve this plan, this vision requires a lifetime of perseverance and devotion. Moreover, the most demanding of it all is whether the content as captured by the artist would reflect the sediment of our history. Undoubtedly, this is a real test.”
