ang Jianwei (1958 Sichuan) is a prominent video and installation artist who acts as a kind of sociologist or anthropologist. Wang's video works often include him as a participant-observer. In one piece, "Cycle-Growing" (1993-1994), Wang records his year-long stint plowing and harvesting in the fields. In "Living Elsewhere" (1999), he documents how farm land is being usurped and how farmers migrate to the big cities. Wang also explores why Beijing's high-rises were built as they were, by recording the lives and conversations of residents, developers, contractors and government regulators. Wang often inserts himself into the works, challenging the division between art and real life. The artist lives and works in Beijing. |
