han Wang (1962 Beijing) is one of China's leading sculptors. He series of artificial rocks are among his most popular works among curators and collectors. The shiny, polished, stainless steel rocks - which are modeled on Chinese garden rocks called Taihu - are meant to be a reflection of the new, fast-paced China, where modern culture is reshaping traditions - and creating dazzling images with little substance. Zhan has also created other photographs and sculptures about the rapid modernization of China. Zhan also has a series of works that deal with balance in the universe. His "New Meteorite Sky-Patching Project" aims to send stainless-steel copies of meteors back into outer space, thus restoring order to the universe. Zhan, who worked as a jade carver in a factory for two years, is a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. |
