Wang Gongxin
ang Gongxin (1960 Beijing) is one of China's foremost video artists. A recurring theme in his pieces is myth versus reality. For "The Sky of Brooklyn: Digging a Hole in Beijing" (1995), Wang dug a hole in his Beijing home and placed a monitor inside to show video footage of the Brooklyn sky. The work was a clever spin on the age-old American childhood dream of digging a hole to China and the Chinese idiom of "viewing the world from a well." For "Myth Powder" (1997), Wang created a fake commercial touting a mythical powder with incredible curative powers. He mixed that with footage he shot of people in public parks doing qigong-type exercises and chanting to themselves phrases such as "Thoughts are normal" and "Inflammation is going down." Packets of myth powder (in reality, flour) were displayed during the video screening. Wang and his wife Lin Tianmiao produced "Here? Or There?" a multimedia commentary on China's pell-mell urban transformation and people's relationship to their environment. Wang and his wife live and work in Beijing.
