uang Yongping (1954 Fujian Province) is considered the most intellectual and philosophical of China's leading contemporary artists. He is also probably the most respected Chinese installation artists working today. Huang has lived in Paris since 1989. But in the early 1980s, he was part of a generation of Chinese artists who began experimenting with radical art works. Strongly influenced by Duchamp and Beuys, he founded Xiamen Dada and began using installations to explore China's relationship with the west; man's relationship to animals; and cross border conflicts and ideology. Huang's works are not easy to collect - they are large and complex. His installations - which feature numerous references to Chinese history and mythology - have included wheels, bridges, an ancient roof, live scorpions and a giant, fiberglass fish. His "Bat Project" series involved creating a replica of the American spy plane that accidentally landed in China and was dismantled by the Chinese government and sent back to the U.S. His art works challenge traditional notions of art, truth and logic. And critics say he creates tension by juxtaposing Chinese and Western concepts and symbols. |
