u Bing (1955 Sichuan) has established himself as one of the world's most prominent artists by engaging in radical experiments with language and linguistic structures. He was part of the New Wave art movement that swept China in the early 1980s. And after graduating from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts, he caused a sensation 1988 when his calligraphic masterpiece, "Book from the Sky," was shown in Beijing. He had designed, carved and printed a series of what appeared to be ancient literary texts using a set of thousands of invented or fake Chinese characters. In 1990, he moved to the U.S., where he continued to experiment with language, codes and meaning. He created "Square Word Calligraphy," an English-language alphabet composed like Chinese characters, often by placing one letter on top or inside of another. He also creatively fashioned characters into birds in flight, painted characters onto the backs of live pigs and produced an ink rubbing from a section of the Great Wall. Critics say Xu Bing's experiments are a profound and compelling commentary on the deceptions and cultural miscues that come from language. For his artistic inventions, Xu Bing was awarded the McArthur Genius Award in 1999. He was also the first living artist ever to be given a solo exhibition at the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C. Xu Bing now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. |
