uang Rui (Beijing 1952) is one of the pioneering Chinese contemporary artists who emerged in the 1980s. He was a member of the Stars Group that made history in 1979, a clan of untrained artists that turned out original work. The group included Wang Keping and Ai Wei Wei. Huang Rui was also one of the first artists in Beijing to work in the Dashanzi Arts District, also known as 798. In the 1980s, he produced mostly paintings, but later turned to installations and performance art. Ocassionally, he can be seen performing in the 798 area. In the 1990s his art entered an all-encompassing experimental phase and traversed a wide field to include painting, installation, performance art, photography and print-making. His most notable art works have in common a critique of autocratic control of discourse. He lived in Japan for near ten years in the 1980s and 1990s. He lives and works in Beijing. |
